| bio | Bowers, Lucy (1860-1935), of Mt. Lebanon, NY, was admitted in 1867, signed the covenant in 1880, and became a
schoolteacher. Many of her poems were published in 1895, and her pamphlet "Concise Statements Concerning the
Life and Religious Views of the Shakers" was probably published in the same year by the North Family, Mt.
Lebanon, Shakers. She went to the Church F., Enfield, CT, in 1896. A trustee and Shaker historian, she collected
and saved many Shaker documents concerning the Enfield, CT, community, and left behind copious compiled lists
relating to the 20th C. members of Enfield, CT, its buildings, etc. She also kept a diary of the last days of this
community. Upon its dissolution, in 1917, she moved to the South F. of Watervliet, NY, where she continued with her
annual diary writing, and helped with canning, made fancy work, participated in outings to Albany to see movies, and
even took an airplane ride!
