A hymnal, "systematically arranged and chirographically [written by hand] compiled' by him in 1849, exists. (A song received by Martha Jane Brainard is also recorded.) In the early 1850s he was involved in the chair business together with Brs. George O'Donnell, Daniel Hawkins, and Robert Wagan of the 2nd F. By 1860 Brainard had transferred his activities to the flannel business and other 2nd F. industries. His "Shaker Catalogue and Amateur's Guide to the Flower and Vegetable Garden" was published in Albany, 1874. He also left behind a "Letter-book of the Second Family," containing ca. 1200 letters, covering 1870s-early 1880s, which reflect its activities. "Dewitt Clinton Brainard, 70, elder and deacon at second family Mt. L. died suddenly" May 11, 1897 (Church F., Hancock Journal) .
