id 109 firstname Jessie lastname Evans birthyr 1867 deathyr 1937 bio Evans, Jessie (1867-1937), of Canterbury, NH, was born in Liverpool, England. She was admitted to Canterbury in 1881, taught summer school in 1884 and 1889, and signed the covenant in 1888. For many years she was the community's schoolteacher (1890-1910), librarian, historian, poet, and nurse - taking Sr. Lucy Hunt's place in the infirmary without specific medical training, as was often the case among the Shakers. She was also a member of the Canterbury quartet; "she had the most beautiful soprano voice you'd ever want to hear, but could she sing bass like any man! You'd swear, it was a man," reminisced Mrs. Thworp (at that time as Shaker girl, Anita Potter), who heard her sing at Hancock, MA. villageplus Canterbury. NH
