Son of a physician, he joined the Shakers, with his parents and three siblings, Emily, Henry and Julia, September 21, 1822. Several members of the Hampton family rose to important positions of leadership. He became a certified teacher and a member of the Board of Education;,,'for thirty years. He also made brooms and shoes, worked in the woolen factory, seed shop, and tailor shop. Gifted in music, he composed hymns, and was influential in using musical innovations and purchasing musical instruments. He preached at public meetings, and also received musical visions or gifts. He was appointed 2nd elder in 1855; was the writer of a pamphlet titled" The Balance Wheel," published there in 1869, and several poems (" The Holy Trinity," "Home of the Oracle, " "Paraphrase, " "Religion, Science, Reason, " among them), and broadsides (Richmond, Vol. I, 1977). He became 2nd in the Ministry in 1881 and kept this position for 15 years, in addition to which he was a trustee of the Ch. F., at Watervliet, OH, in 1895. His journals, covering the span from 1846 to 1900, constitute valuable source of information about Union Village. He died March 29th, 1901, at the shortlived (1898- 1902) Shaker Community at White Oak, Camden Co., GA. villageplus Union Village. OH
