(VB-353 SF) West Family closed in 1913-4 when Rachel McDonald and Isaac Anstatt died. Harriet then moved to Church Family. Church Family closed in 1927 and Harriet was one of four still living there -- Libby DeLong, Julia McNally, Josephine Hewitt and Harriet Jones. Their photo appeared in the newspaper indicating they were protesting being thrown out of their home" because unbeknownst to them the Shakers had sold the Church Family. Actually the property had been for sale for several years. Financial settlements were made with McNally and Hewitt but what Harriet received I haven't found yet. Previous to the closing several other sisters had moved to the South Family, knowing the closing was inevitable and not being able to tolerate Libbie Delong. My only remembrance of meeting a Shaker is when I went with my father (the grocer) as a little girl to the Shakers. Things were upset, as I vaguely remember, because I think now that thev were in the process of moving out. My father introduced me to Sister Harriet (the first black woman I had ever met) who was sitting in a chair. She gave me a satin bookmark with a Bible verse, which I still have. 5/22/96 eds o_author %x 5/22/96 eds
