id 171 firstname Polly lastname Lee birthyr 1820 deathyr 1916 bio Lee, Polly (1820-1916), of Watervliet, NY, was born in Salina, Onondaga Co., NY. She was taken in by Shakers in 1833, at Sodus Bay, and transferred to Groveland, NY, in March 1838. She signed the covenant in 1842 and was in charge of girls and later was a family eldress. Upon Groveland's dissolution she transferred to Watervliet, NY, in 1892. Although already 72 years of age, she adjusted to the change remarkably well. She was described by T. S.[herburne] (WRHS, Reel 123) as follows: "Eldress at the North F., when...1 was 7 or 8 at the time... She suffered a painful nerve disease which affected the side of her face. Always wore a lace-scarf...to protect her face. Taught me to sew. Her little five foot black walnut bed is on loan from me at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum in Maine. Tiny, frail and independent!" [Her bed, made just for her by a brother from the Groveland community, is now owned by the Shaker Heritage Society, Albany, NY.] She also taught in the North F. school prior to its closing in 1915. villageplus Watervliet.
