id 175 firstname Eva May lastname Libby birthyr 1872 deathyr 1966 bio Libby, Eva May (1872-1966), was born in Bridgton, ME, and came to the Shakers in 1882, accompanied by her older brother Franklin. They were both indentured by Elder John Vance, who became their legal guardian in 1880. She was at the 2nd F., Alfred, ME, in 1886, became an associate eldress at the Church F., and trustee in 1911. She served as 2nd eldress from 1917 to 1931. In 1927, together with Eldress Harriet Coolbroth, she again served as trustee until 1931. She was among those who moved to Sabbath day Lake, ME, upon consolidation of the two communities, in 1931. She belonged to "the last of her generation of Maine believers" (Br. Arnold Hadd, 1990) and was described as "a noble and faithful sister whose years were filled with good work." A manuscript of hers: "The sayings of Elder John B. Vance," [1896], still exists.
