| bio | Lyman, Amelia M. (1831-1892), of Enfield, CT, (date of birth taken from a sampler she embroidered when 29
years old), was a member of a large and prominent family containing at least 1° Shaker members. The 1860, 1870,
and 1880 US Census listed Sr. Amelia as "house keeper," at the Church F. It was said of her: "All who visited the
Shakers [in 1870s] will remember Amelia Lyman. On her it oftenest devolved to entertain guests, and a model
hostess she made. At her death a few years ago she left many loving friends. She is revered by many of the
younger women as a sort of mother, as she brought up so many girls." (Jessie Miriam Brainard, 1897)
