id 185 firstname Aurelia lastname Mace birthyr 1835 deathyr 1910 bio Mace, Aurelia (1835-1910), was a trustee at Sabbathday Lake, ME. The youngest child among six girls and two boys, she was the daughter of Marquis de LaFayette Mace, a Universalist minister, and Sarah Norton Flint. Altogether four of the Mace sisters and their mother died in the Shaker faith. Sr. Aurelia lived a remarkable life. She signed the Church F. covenant when 23, and served as school teacher from 1853 until 1880. In addition, she was 2nd eldress, from 1860 to 1866, and again from 1869(?) to 1880. In that capacity she pushed for the construction of a new schoolhouse, which was completed in 1880. She was office sister in 1890, and trustee from 1896 until her death. She introduced new products such as Shaker Lemon Syrup, revitalized the traditional fir balsam pillow, horsehair sieve, and brush industries, and may have been the one to start selling the fir balsam pillows to the public. She also kept the Church F. journal from 1884 to 1909. She was the organizer of exhibits in the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Museum, and introduced the telephone system to her village. She was a prolific writer of letters; corresponding with, among others, Leo Tolstoy, the pacifist Russian writer. She was also the writer of "The Aletheia: Spirit of Truth." A booklet containing poems and letters in her memory was published in 1910.
