| bio | Mathers, Jennie, was born in northern Maine; after her mother died she was brought to the Shakers by her father in
1893. She taught from 1920 through 1927, when she became the postmistress of the Sabbathday Lake Post Office,
and served in this capacity for over nineteen years. At the same time (November, 1926 to May, 1946), she fulfilled the
duties of 2nd eldress, while also being a trustee or deaconess at the Church F., Alfred, ME (in 1931). In addition,
during the 1930s-1940s, she produced the famous Shaker candies. She is credited as the compiler of "Receipts as
Used by the Shaker Sisters, "published in 1933 at Sabbathday Lake. Upon her death, May 8, 1946, her postmistress
duties were assumed by Sr. Eleanor Philbrook.
