He, his brother, William, and his sister, Sarah, grew up in the Pleasant Hill, KY, Shaker society, where they were brought in, following the cholera epidemic of 1849. Francis grew up in the West F., and was educated as a dentist in Cincinnati, OH. He was mechanically inclined and invented a new dumping wagon, for which a patent was granted to him and his brother on October 3, 1876.
