At the age of 16 he learned the mason's trade in Springfield, MA. Well educated, he acted as a missionary and teacher among the Indians. He moved to Cleveland, OH, in July, 1826, and continued working as a stone mason; he laid the foundation of the Center F. Dwelling House at North Union, in 1826 and joined the "colony" the same year. He served as 1st and 2nd elder from 1827, at various times and in the different families; taught school, and still found time to help to build the famous lower pond, in 1836-1837. He was also a trustee for 40 years. His manuscripts provided scholars with many insights into local Shaker history. In addition, he was highly skilled in writing inspired verse and music. He died April 3, 1888, a year before the end of the colony, aged 85. Thus he served this society almost 62 years of the 67 years of its existence (North Union was established in 1822). villageplus North Union. OH
