| bio | Sarle, Cora Helena (1867-1956), of Canterbury, NH, was born in North Scituate, MA. She joined the Shakers when
15 years of age, and signed the covenant when she turned 21. Her artistic ability with a brush and palette was
characterized in the following way: "Her work is realistic and accurate like all other Shaker craftsmen. She paints
exactly what she sees, showing a spirit, however, of the impact on the Shakers of the changing seasons with their
natural colorings, combining the qualities of observation and love of nature..." (Irene Zieget, 1973). She also
possessed a beautiful soprano voice and .was a member of the Canterbury Que Viva Quartette, which received
considerable recognition throughout New England. In addition, she played the trumpet for several years in the
Canterbury Orchestra, which at one time counted ten Shaker Sisters." She was also known for her delicious baked
pies and breads.
