id 262 firstname Walter lastname Shepard birthyr 1852 deathyr 1933 bio Shepard (Shepherd), Walter (1852-1933), of Mt.Lebanon, NY, was born in Guide Bridge, Lancashire, England; he came to the United States in 1887, and for a year he lived with a Faithist colony in New Mexico. He joined the North F., Mt. Lebanon, in 1888, and signed the probationary covenant the same year. In 1892 he was appointed 2nd elder of the North F. and became its 1st elder in 1911. In addition, he served as 2nd elder in the Lead Ministry in 1911 (with Elder Joseph Holden), and as 1 st elder in the Ministry from 1919 to 1933. During that time he was a contributor to non-Shaker publications, like CHRISTIAN CENTURY, 1922. He firmly believed that Shakerism had had its day and "although it was to last for at least another fifty years,' he 'Iooked ahead to the time when the last of the Shakers will have gone to Heaven. To him there was nothing to be feared in death' (BERKSHIRE EAGLE, 1919). He made his last public appearance on October 15, 1932, addressing the opening of an exhibition of Shaker furniture at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA. villageplus Mt.Lebanon. NY
