id 267 firstname Eliza R. lastname Smith birthyr 1831 deathyr 1899 bio Smith, Eliza R. (1831-1899), of the Church F., Alfred, ME, was at the 2nd F. in 1886. "When the North F. was closed in 1865 it fell to the 2nd F. to become the Gathering Order for the Alfred community. Under the able leadership of Elder John Vance and Eldress Eliza Smith, the 2nd F. was greatly increased in spiritual gifts as well as numbers. By 1872 the 2nd F. actually outnumbered the Church F." (Br. Arnold Hadd, 1990). In that year, due to a reorganization, "the best members of the 2nd F. were removed to the Church F. (including the entire Elders' Order)." In 1879, upon the death of Eldress Francella Blake, who died when only 35, Sr. Eliza "chose to become a Mother in need at the 2nd F., rather than to remain in the Ministry's Order" and therefore she returned to the 2nd F. "The 1870's and 80's were a time of prosperity for Believers at Alfred. The village was wholly renewed." Upon failing health she was replaced, in 1887, by Sr. Harriett Coolbroth, whom she helped to bring up. All three Sisters: Francella Blake, Eliza Smith, and Harriett Coolbroth were referred to, by Sr. Mildred Barker, as "pillars of Zion." villageplus the Church F.. Alfred
