| bio | Tate, Caroline L. (1859-1937), together with her brother, Jame, lived with the Enfield, CT, Shakers from the age of
two. When 11 years old she was "keeping house," She signed the covenant in 1880. Sr. Caroline stayed at the
Church F., was appointed eldress in 1899, and was the last eldress there. Upon Enfield's closure, in 1917, she
moved to Watervliet, NY, where she died at the South F., at the age of 78. Together with Eldresses Anna Case and
Ella Winship, she helped to preserve Shaker historical records by sending them to the Western Reserve Historical
Society, in Cleveland, OH.
