id 302 firstname Robert M. lastname Wagan birthyr 1833 deathyr 1883 bio Wagan, Robert M. (1833-1883), was born in New York City and admitted to the 2nd F., Mt. Lebanon, NY, in October, 1839. He became family deacon of the South F., Mount Lebanon, and was appointed 2nd elder in 1863. Under his leadership the production of chairs and rockers was organized into an industry around 1870 (requiring construction of at least three chair factories; although the production was at full capacity for home production since 1852). This industry was advertised under the name of R. M. Wagan and Co. in catalogs (first issued in 1875), for mail-order houses. Even after Robert Wagan's death at age 50, the name was still used as a trade name for commercial Shaker chair output, last under Sr. Sadie Neal, around 1924. The Shakers were awarded with a medal and diploma for their furniture at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. Also exhibited at the same place and time was William Potter's and Robert Wagan's improved green-corn cutter, for which they both obtained a patent.
