id 310 firstname Freegift lastname Wells birthyr 1785 deathyr 1871 bio Wells, Freegift (1785-1871), the last of eleven children and the seventh of seven sons, came to the Watervliet, NY, Shakers in May 1803 (his family first joined the Mt. Lebanon Shakers). He went to live in the 1st order of the Church F. in December, 1810, signed the covenant in 1814, and was appointed elder in place of Nathan Spier in May 1817. He later became Ministry Elder. (His oldest brother was Seth Youngs Wells, a schoolteacher, and his mother, born Abigail Youngs, was the sister of Isaac Newton Youngs, another prominent Shaker-cabinetmaker, clockmaker and scribe). Br. Freegift was a school teacher, mechanic, woodturner, and cabinetmaker. In the spring of 1836 he was sent to Union Village, OH, to become 1st Minister there, and stayed until 1843. He then returned to WateNliet, to be an elder, until 1857. During that time he helped to design the 1848 Meeting House. He ran the silver pen business for many years, continued making furniture, and repaired wooden items.

Freegift Wells , a worthy member of our Community, deceased on Saturday, the 15th of April (1871): aged SS years 10 months and 25 days. He was the youngest of a family of 11 children—all now dead, save one, whose present age is over 93 years. The remarkable longevity of this family is worthy of notice. Thomas and Abigail Wells, the parents of said family of children, were each, respectively, 80 and 85 years of age at death. The names and ages of the ten children, who lived to mature years, were as follows, viz. : Set!) Y.
