id 321 firstname John lastname Whitely birthyr 1819 deathyr 1905 bio Whitely, John (1819-1905), head of Harvard/Shirley Ministry, was born April 5th, in Ruddersfield, England. He was admitted to the South F., Shirley, in October, 1849, together with his wife and children. From there he moved to the North F. in 1861, where he became an elder. He was appointed to be 1st in Ministry in November, 1871, but after Simon T. Atherton's death in 1888, he became his successor in sales of catalogs advertising over 200 medicinal herbs, and other plant materials. A broom-maker by trade, he kept up the sale of brooms, too, and although there were too few members, he struggled to keep the Shaker industries active. He was an able administrator and writer, much respected and loved by his community. He also served as a member of the District #7 Town School Board.
