From 1909 to 1915, she was among the major saleswomen of fancy goods, making numerous sales trips to fairs, resorts, and hotels, as well as making the famous Shaker cloaks. Having expressed interest in astronomy, she learned it from a teacher in that field (secured by Eldress Dorothy Durgin), and a planisphere was bought especially for her.
