id 333 firstname Ella lastname Winship birthyr 1857 deathyr 1941 bio Winship, Ella (1857-1941), of the North F., Watervliet, NY, came there originally from Groveland, NY. She became a teacher at the District School No. 14 as early as 1895 and in the years between 1906 and 1912, she did much of the sewing for the North F. She helped Eldress Anna Case to close down the North F., in 1919, and went to live at the South F., where she taught school for three years. Her students at the North and the South Families revered and loved her, and she was described by one of her students as a "real teacher, strict and demanding, but with a sure understanding of her pupils and how they learned" (Hulings, 1983). She moved again, to Mt. Lebanon, NY, where she became a member of the Central Ministry in July, 1922, replacing Catherine Allen and assisting Sr. Sarah Burger. She became 1st in the Ministry in December, 1933, and stayed in that position until her death. She was also the trustee at the North F., Mt. Lebanon, in 1940. Together with Eldresses Anna Case and Caroline Tate, she was instrumental in helping Mr. H. Wallace Cathcart to preserve the Watervliet historical records at The Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, OH. villageplus the North F.. Watervliet

(MK-15304 #1121,Groveland Journal) Was in group that in 1892, when Groveland closed, moved to the Watervliet North Family buildings. She became the leader of this family after Elder Alexander Work and Eldress Polly Lee died - Elder Josiah Barker of CF handled the business affairs but she was the person in residence who had to handle the daily house-hold decisions. Was in group that in 1919, when North Family closed, moved to Watervliet South Family. She was the schoolteacher for several years until her leadership quality made her presence ne- cessary at the Lebanon North Family. I would guess that it was her death that prompted the closing of the last family at New Lebanon and the transfer of the remaining sisters to Hancock. 27 Oct 1923 Eldress Anna and Hugo go to Mt. Lebanon with Eldress Ella's goods, organ and all. 19 Apr 1924 Hugo and Byron take 100 bu. oats to Lebanon NF, a rose bush and 3 cakes of honey to Eldress Ella.
