Her mother was Sophia, b. 4 Apr 1780, d. 2 Dec 1866. Had 2 stepbrothers and 2 stepsisters by earlier marriage, all of whom were placed at Enfield, Conn. Gilbert Jr. stayed at Enfield, was an elder, d. 1908, ae 100 yrs. Maria died there, aged 6; Julia stayed there & died 1886, ae. 80; Gilson left at age of 21. In 1819 he was listed among the Young Believeres at Saybrook. Was only 6 when he came to Lebanon. "When Giles Avery entered the NL Office family in 1821 as the only boy in that order, he was placed under the tutelage of Benjamin Lyon, a skilled artisan, from whom the youth probably received his first lessons in mechanical technique." p. 35, Andrews "Shaker Furniture" "Giles Avery of NL Church Family served, as was the custom, " a long apprenticeship in hand labor before he was considered qualified for spiritual leadership. Avery's manual employment consisted of carpentry, plastering, plumbing, digging foundations, sawing stone, repairing buildings, making wagons, joinery, making dippers and constructing cisterns and orcharding." pp 75-6, Andrews "Work and Worship" In the book SHAKER DESIGN, catalog of exhibit at Whitney Museum in 1986, No. 54 was a dipper attributed to Avery. "Dipper making was a craft related to boy:-making. A key part of both processes was soaking or steaming a thin strip of wood until it was sufficiently flexible to wrap around a mold for shaping. In contrast to the pointed swallowtail joints on oval boX.es, those on dippers were straight, for reasons that are not clear. Dippers were used to measure dry substances such as grain or flour in quantities up to one quart." By the 1830s Avery was mmaking wooden dippers, a business that had been operated until 1811 by Abiathar Babbitt, who had gone on to boK-making. As late as 1845, Avery was still making . dippers, making a machine for planing the rims, although dipper- making had ceased to be profitable in the 1840s at Lebanon. 13 Oct 1859 Having been an elder in NL Church Family, went into Society ministry with Amos Stewart at the age of 25. The Ministry usually came to Watervliet about 4 times a year, staying in total 16-20 weeks. Groveland and Lebanon itself were also included in the territory the Ministry had to oversee. Dec 1860 See entries in Freegift Wells' Journal for indications of Elder Giles' help in sawmill. 7 Apr 1864 Brought 5 hives of Italian bees from Lebanon. 7 Apr 1864 He and Nehemiah White got their bees out of the cellars and nput outdoors  59 or 60 swarms. 27 Dec 1870 Elder Giles began lecturing youth & children on physiology, hygiene, morality, religion, etc. (VB-338) 2 Jan 1871 Elder Giles is helping get up a new style of seed boxes with a drawer. (VB-338 CF-DAB) 16 Dec 1872 Elder Giles comes to help WE where Alexander Youngs, Trustee, has become insane (because of barns burning in October) and is unable to perform his business. (VB-338) 14 Jun 1873 He and Elder Daniel Boler of Lebanon Ministry have worked on new WF barn all week. (VB-326) 22 May 1875 Has finished "a very splendid desk for the elders' rooms." (Ann Buckingham Journals) 2 Jul 1880 Elder Giles finished making 3 "Ladies Parlor Bureaus," to be sold for $30 each. Two were purchased by Mr. Eastman and Mr. Leland of Albany. (VB-338) 12 Nov 1884 Doing carpentry in the new bathroom at SP. (VB-350 Graves-SF) 21 Dec 1890 Eldress Harriet called Elder Isaac (WF) to see Elder Giles, he is very bad off with bladder trouble. Elders Ozias (SF), Josiah Barker (CF) and Isaac take turns staying at night with him. (WF Journal-McDonald) 27 Dec 1890 Died about 2 pm. Elder Isaac helped lay him out and thenleft at 5 pm for Hancock and Lebanon. Snowed heavily the next day and took 4 yoke of oxen to break road. (WF) 27 Dec 1890 Elder Giles "passed to spirit life." (VB-314) 29 Dec 1890 .Isaac returns. Two sleighloads (12) of Lebanon people come. (WF Journals) 30 Dec 1890 Two sleighloads (8) come from Hancock and Enfield, Ct. His funenral.
