id 97 firstname George Hamilton lastname DeGraw birthyr 1853 deathyr 1937 bio DeGraw, George Hamilton (1853-1937), of Watervliet, NY, joined the Groveland, NY, Shakers in 1853 as an infant of four months, together with his eight siblings (including Eleanor). Upon that community's dissolution, in 1892, he transferred to the Watervliet, North F., and then its South F. He was a horticulturist and helped to perfect hybrid corn for Burpee Seed Co. He maintained a farm garden produce plot at the North F., developing varieties of sweet pea (his favorite flower), and growing asparagus, radishes, cantaloupes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes. In 1891 and 1892 he wrote several articles for WORLD'S ADVANCE THOUGHT (Portland, Oregon), and one to THE SOWER (New York), on international arbitration and spiritualism. He also wrote for the MANIFESTO, a Shaker publication. In 1919, upon the closing of the North F., he moved to the South F. He went on a month's trip to several Shaker societies, in 1920, and to Washington, DC, in 1922, and took an airplane ride, after the Albany airport opened in the summer of 1929. . A dedicated, charming man,. and: "a slight, softspoken man with a nice sense of humor" noted "T. S." in WRHS, Reel 123); [T.S. are the initials of Trudy Reno Sherburne, 1987.] He was the last Brother to teach in Watervliet Shaker schools, was a Shaker for 84 years, and was one of the last Shakers to be buried in the Shaker cemetery at Watervliet. villageplus Watervliet.
