bio Greaves, Charles (1828-1916), of Mt. Lebanon, NY, was of English parentage, but was born in Orange, NJ. His family joined the Shakers in 1849. His sister, Ann Maria was a Shaker, too (see above). Br. Charles was elder in the Upper Canaan F., for 12 years, but after financial problems developed there, he resigned and went back to the North F. He was famous as an owner, at age of 84, of a horse, "Old Billy," aged 42! Attributed to him was the invention of a fertilizing machine.
