She was born in Barnstead, NH, and came to the Shakers in 1846. Sr. Joanna first served as a family deaconess, from 1852 to 1854; she taught one summer term in 1859; served in the Church F. as 2nd Eldress in 1862 (next to Dorothy Durgin); in the North F. as 1st Eldress, in 1867-1870; as 2nd Eldress in 1870; and as 1st Eldress in 1877. .'n Memoriam..." dedicated to Eldress Dorothy Durgin (1825-1898), and to her, was published in Concord, NH, by the Rumford Press, in 1899. It celebrates their lives with 'tributes by Shakers and others, press notices, poems, and music. As the special companion of Eldress Dorothy, Eldress Joanna's stewardship is so closely interwoven with hers, that it would be difficult to disassociate the two." (Mary L. Richmond, Vol. II, 1977.)
