Unfortunately, as she was often ill, I never knew her well..." 1862 on list of school girls, 15 years old. 2 Aug 1870 Went on trip to Lebanon with 5 others. Back Aug. 13. (VB-326 WF) 12 Nov 1872 Made a family deaconess. 29 Mar 1876 Went to Troy and brought home a sofa. 20 Sep 1877 The caretaker of the girls, her stand was set on fire by Emily Kennedy but discovered in time. (VB-326) 5 Mar 1882 Became Elder Sister with Eldress Alvira Conklin. (VB-343 WF Blase) 14 Mar 1882 Moved from Girls Shop into Eldresses room to live (as Elder Sister). Eldress Paulina Bates had just stepped down and been succeeded by Alvira Conklin. 1882-1892 Rachel is the author of the West Family Journals, which Shaker Heritage Society owns. July 1890 Had two nieces and a nephew boarding at WF for six weeks. They went home Aug. 27. (VB-326) 4 June 1898 Eldress Alvira died and Rachel became Eldress--the last Eldress of the West Family. 3 May 1913 Rachel died, aged 66-6-16.
