id 205 firstname Elijah Jr. lastname Myrick birthyr 1824 deathyr 1890 bio Myrick, Elijah Jr. (1824-1890), of the Church F., Harvard, MA, was born in Eastham, Barnstable, MA. He was one of the twelve Myrick children brought in to the community in 1830, some of whom became prominent Shakers. As a teenager he already worked at the sawmill and later was active with all kinds of woodworking projects, including parts for looms, broomhandles, and farm shed framing. His large signed cupboard, built in 1869, and located at Fruitlands Museums, is inscribed with a long text, praising the government of Massachusetts! He was involved with the water system in the cow barn, and had a steampipe run to the water trough, thus securing ",hot water for the cows in winter time. He was also an innovator, having patented an improved cast iron chimney cap, produced by a Nashua, NH, firm in 1869, and invented improvements for carriage curtains and spring rocking chairs. He served as an elder for seven years, and as a trustee for forty. In that latter capacity he traveled throughout New England to sell Shaker produce, garden seeds among them, and to purchase necessary items. He also served on the school board in the town of Harvard for ten years and wrote frequent theological articles to the Shaker MANIFESTO and non-Shaker publications. villageplus the Church F.. Harvard
