id 280 firstname Prudence lastname Stickney birthyr 1860 deathyr 1950 bio Stickney, Prudence (1860-1950), of Sabbathday Lake, ME, was brought by her father, a lumberman, to the Shakers when a small child; her spiritual parents became Elder Otis Sawyer and Eldress Hester Ann Adams. She was placed at Poland Hill, ME, in 1865 and stayed there until 1876; her first teacher was Sophia Mace, sister to Aurelia Mace, under whose direct care and guidance she eventually came. "Little Prudie" was very interested in poetry, copied a lot of it when a young child and wrote many poems later. At age 22 she in turn assisted Sr. Ada Cummings in supervision and teaching (1882-1884) of little girls. Prudence signed the Church F. covenant in 1884. She was appointed 2nd eldress in 1890 (to 1900), and again, from 1901 to 1926. In 1915. or 1920 she was appointed to become 2nd in Ministry, to serve with Eldress Lizzie Noyes, until 1927; and in 1926 she became family trustee and eldress. She was involved with the consolidation of the Alfred community and her own, in 1931 (serving as a trustee at Alfred in that year).
