bio Wickersham, George M. (1811-1891), of the Church F., Mt. Lebanon, NY, was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He joined the Shakers to learn carpentry, at sixteen years of age. He previously spent one year with his family at Valley Forge, PA, in an Owenite community, and one year in his father's wire-working business. An inscription on a lap desk that he made reads: "Made by George Wickersham 1841 North Family Phebe Ann Jones.. In July, 1848, he was doing the inside finishing woodwork on the Meeting House in Watervliet, NY, with Amos Bishop, and James Wilson - all three from different families at Mt. Lebanon. He was not only the designer of the great stone barn, but also of the Church F. brick Dwelling House, built in 1875, after the previous dwelling burned in the same year. His architectural floor plans for the Dwelling and the Ministry House are now in the collection of the Western Reserve Historical Society. He was a cabinetmaker, a mechanic, and an inventor as well. In 1863 he developed an "ironing arch," used for heating flat irons, which at the same time protected the room from the additional heat in summertime. Also attributed to him was a turbine water wheel. His autobiography, "How I Came to Be a Shaker. Mount Lebanon, N. Y." was printed in 1891, at East Canterbury, NH.
