18 Feb 1845 Sawed first logs in new mill.
25 Feb 1845 Meetings etc. about building new Meeting House;
Freegift & Jesse Harwood go to "the manner and form of building
the railroad house, thinking to get some knowledge or informa-
tion that would be useful in calculating the frame of the new
Meeting House"; elders & deacons meet to settle on size and loca-
tion of it.

14 Mar 1845 "We learn from report and the public presss^that
there is considerable going on in the Legislature concerning^ our
people and Society. False rumor begins to spread, law suits pen-
ding, lawyers standing with open doors willing to lend their hand
to either party; some very friendly to the Society - talk much
about the base and false charges brought against us in the Senate
by one Clark, a member from Washington County. He declares his
sentiments in the Senate chamber or room in bitter epithets
towards the Society of Shakers. He calls them prostitutes, base
characters, deluded fanatics, etc. - presents a bill to prevent
the binding of minor children to the Society, etc. The bill be-
ing discountenanced as unjust by Senators Sherman, Backus and
others, was laid upon the table."
17 Mar 1845 Three of CFR go to see Judge McKown & Surrogate
Blanchard. "The people are very much awake in Albany, discredi-
ting the charges and reports brought against the Society, wish-
ing to have them confuted and contradicted by us. Others again
are ready to cry out, "Delusion, delusion! Shakers! Shakers!
Fanatics!" and the like, by way of contempt and derision."VB-321
20 May 1845 A 4th waterwheel finished for them. They now have
one wheel for sawing, two for grist, and 4th for running machin-
ery, circular saws, etc.
24 Jul 1845 Begin work on putting a T on the Dwelling House.
13 Nov 1845 Elder Brother Freegift and another went to swamp
"to try the experiment of gathering some moss to fill between
the lath and clapboarding of the new addition to the dwelling
house. Got one load. /
26 Nov 1845 Freegift and 13 brethrentaent to Wilson's and got
27 loads of moss.
21 Mar 1846 "We had some Indian bread this morning; it was
baked in our own oven, ground in our own mill and made from our
own corn. It was very good. I understand that we are to have
tonight some bread made of wheat flour which was also ground in
our mill--the first that they have ground."
14 Jul 1846 A watering place on the Troy Road has been made by
setting a tub and conducting a spring into it.
10 Aug 1846 "We have the appearance of a revival of religion
near home within our own town among the Methodists. Today they
are holding a camp meeting within two miles northeast of the Wa-
tervliet settlement, near or at the same place a camp meeting was
held last year. This too we hope will be productive of good and
tend to moralize if not spiritualize our neighbors..."
