1 Jun 1849 "Family brethren washed their sheep. Joel Smith
and a number more came very near drowning when plank became loose.
Some could not swim and held onto those that could and kept them

up to new house. Witbecks (who lived near River Farm) went and
secured the scow or it would have been lost. Also they went on
the Island and swam offX" some of the Shaker cattle. One of the
steers swam .down river a mile below Vischers Ferry and finally
made it to shore. They put him in a stable, blanketed and rubbed
