23 Oct 1856 The Trustees begin going to Albany without having
to pay toll each time. They have made arrangements to pay $9
every quarter for the 1st and 2d Orders. (PAB)
3 Nov 1856 Began to put up coal stoves: 1 at Garden Shop, 2
in Office, 1 in Schoolhouse, 1 in Herb Shop, 1 in Shoemaker's
Shop, 1 at Blacksmith's Shop. (DAB)
6 Nov 1856 Two brethren and 3 hired men went to fix the
watering place between Shakers and Albany.
1 Jan 1857 "The New Year has commenced without waiting to see
if we were prepared." (PAB)
22 Jan 1857 Snowing and very cold. Maynard went to Albany
after manure but upset and "corked" one of his horses badly;
James Starks went to Albany after a load but had tothrow part of
it off, and James, who had gone with Starks, had to walk home.
Calvin went after coal but had to leave his load in the road and
borrow a horse to ride home. Ministry sisters and brethren were
coming from Lebanon but got to Goves on Loudonville Road and it
was impossible for them to go further.
23 Jan 1857 30 below. Several brethren started soon after
breakfast to get Ministry. Met them about 2 miles from Goves
with a neighbor digging through the snow. Took 7 brethren and 12
horses to get Ministry thru. (PAB)
28 Jan 1857 During last night the hen house was broken into
and some 40 fowls stolen and slaughtered on the spot. The
thieves were tracked to the door of a house, house entered with a
search warrant and 33 fowls recovered. (VB-338)
10 Feb 1857 Bad flooding of both Mohawk and Hudson Rivers with
ice jams. Broadway in Albany is completely flooded. (VB-338)
29 Apr 1857 Elder Brother Freegift released; Chauncey Copley
to take his place; Chauncey Miller to be prime Trustee; Channing
Prentiss to be a Trustee to remain about home. 9PAB)
2 May 1857 "C. Copley takes his place at the head of the
table this noon with a heavy heart, I dare say." CC said his
calling had been in the temporal for many years, now he was going
to labor for the spiritual. (PAB)
26 May 1857 Ephraim Prentiss of CF and Shubel Prentiss of WRF
go to Albany to take lessons in dentistry. "There is liberty for
all to have false teeth that need them." (PAB)
18 Jun 1857 Ministry Elders and Trustees have meeting
regarding George Price getting a patent for his "butter
squasher." (PAB)
4 July 1857 Elder Brother and DAB are putting a partition in
the mill to give DAB a place to do printing. (PAB)
8 July 1857 Azuba Train died.
27 Oct 1857 Island under water. Water in barn is 22 inches
deep so cow was found standing with water on her udder. Some of
the neighbors helped and they got the cow up on a platform in the
woodhouse, took large pigs to Witbecks, put small ones overhead
in the shanties. (PAB)
