25Aug 1864 "Load after load of the world's people ride up to
the Office and rave about the Village. One company (rowdies) of
12 or 14 in number, I suppose from the factories at Cohoes , stole
some melons and hid themselves behind the drying house while eat-

10 Sep 1864 Benjamin Chick (a hired man) has 'soldered about
400 dozen cans of corn and tomatoes . (PAB) (Their canning pro-
cess involved putting the fruit or vegetables into the cans,
putting on a cover with a small hole, cooking them, and then the
hole had to be soldered shut.)
17 Dec 1864 "The Ministry introduced in our meeting this even-
ing the manner of the family eating for dinners in the same man-
ner as other .meals, both brethren and sisters kneel and be
seated. Also a gift to deliver up all dauguerrotypes etc. and

10 Apr 1865 We received the news that Gen. Lee surrendered to

12 Apr 1865 CF Trustees have bought about 30 acres adjoining
their south farm at $90 per acre. (VB-338),.
15 Apr 1865 Got the news of Lincoln's assassination and attack
on Sec . Seward . ( Seward 's condition concerned them just as much
as he had visited them. )
19 Apr 1865 "President Johnson advised all to help the day,
especially Christians, in consequence of the death of President
Lincoln. Accordingly we all assembled in the meeting room right
after dinner, sung an appropriate song, kneeled in prayer, a
number spoke, etc. All hanj^ds turned out and raked the dooryards
in the afternoon." (PAB)
4 May 1865 "Almira Treadway continues insance and has to be

16 Aug 1865 ( Sun) Considerable company today, some from Schenec-
tady , others from Albany, all were very anxious for dinner but we
refused them all for we could not possibly do it. Philip Smith
took PAB and two other sisters after whortleberries. Chas.
Brackett also went with them, "it being almost dangerous for
females to be out in these days." (PAB)
