cobblestone for the WF, then draw lumber to the two families.
Both are getting ready to rebuild their barns. (PAB) CF is also
wintering 4 colts and 40 sheep for WF; sent their hired men to
the quarry to help get out stone; have 2 hired men in their mill
making window and door frames for WF barns. .
25 Apr 1873 Put down Brussels carpeting in sifters and
brethren rooms. (PAB)
12 June 1873 Visit by "the governor's lady" (Governor is
Johrfcix) and two grandchildren and two servants, one of each sex,
besides the coachman. "She is a splendid woman, did not let us
know who she was till a short time before she left." (PAB)
13 June 1873 Thurlow Weed's daughter Emily came with some Eng-
lish friends. They walked around some and bought a few things.
24-25 Jun 1873 Raised the new SF barn. Eight of CF brethren
and hirfed men go to help. (PAB)
1 July 1873 Raised the new WF barn. Some CF sisters went to
help. (PAB)
21 July 1873 "This afternoon our esteemed friend Thurlow Weed
anjjfd his daughter, Harriet, Emily with her husband Barker and
their two daughters, visited. The old gentleman is very feeble.
It is not likely he will ever come to see us again. He has been
a great friend to the Shakers. Seward and he were great

4 Aug 1873 Dogs got in their flock of sheep, killed some,
maimed many more that had to be killed because of broken legs,

Brethren tracked the dogs "to or near neighbor Hills and found
the tracks exactly fitted but the old lady declared the dog was
in the house all night." (PPAB)
29 Aug 1873 About 2 a.m. they heard a gun go off and Daniel
had caught a dog in a trap he had set by the sheep. They killed
the dog, put him on a wheelbarow and brought it to the house.
Some time after breakfast, two brethren of SF came and said dog
had been at their sheep and bit nearly 20; had also been in WF
sheep. After dinner John Hill came and admitted it was his
dogJThey opened the dog and found wool and part of a sheep's bag
so there was no mistake. (PAB)
25 Nov 1873 Had a meeting of elders, deacons and brethren and
sister;/ who do milking, and agreed that sisters are to milk until
1 Decemberst, then brethren until March. (DAB)
1 Dec 1873 Elders and deacons met with ministry. "Photo-
graphs, daguerrotypes and ferrotypes have been carried too far
and must be checked. None but those taken in scenery are ap-
proved; all personal, individual or groups of individuals not
attached to scenery must be given up to Elders or destroyed."
"And then came on the most important topic of all. Music and
Musical Instruments. Various opinions and feelings concerning
its introduction among us at present. Families tocjmuch involved
in consequence of the burning of barns and establishing new ones,
to purchase an organ at present. So it remains unsettled." (DAB)
