25 Mar "A man with a span of horses and wagon drops a second man near the front gate by the
blacksmith's shop and goes off and leaves him. With much difficulty the man got to the
Office where/fie brethren and sisters clean and clothe him and minister to his necessities.
He says his name is Luther Morse'and that he belongs to the Province of Maine/ that he
has seven children/ his wife is dead/ and he has been a prisoner in Montreal . That he
was exchanged and has been sick for nine months In a hospitalin Sockets Harbor. On
his trip from therehe was taken cold and had a relapse of camp fever.
26 Mar Sent for doctor but man dies about 9 p.m.
27 Mar Brother goes this morning and invites other families to come and help bury the dead man.
Give him a "decent burial. "
14 Apr "The little constable Hocknell comes ago In. to take some of the brethren to jail fornot
paying muster fines but/ not knowing the brethren/ he misses his aim/ the brethren that
were liable being then at the sawmil I. Benjamin Train, not being in the warrant/ starts
out of the mil I apparently in a frightin order to decoy the constable. Hocknell, seeing
this/ chased after Benjamin and they had a severe race. Benjamin slacked his pace and let
him come up with him after he had drawn him away from the mill, Benjamin then informed
him that he was not either of the brethren that he was after/ so Hocknell went off. "
4 May "Elfas BunnePs wife comes from the Jersey State with two of her wicked brothers/ who
at the 2d Family seize little Caroline and carry her off/ atthe same time presenting
their pistols at her father/threatening his lifeIf he attempted to interfere. "
Nathan Spier received $240 from the Lebanon CF as consideration of his natural right
to his father's farm and Zeviah received $120.
8 May The brethren rebuild the burying ground fence.
10 May Youth and children are to have "spoon victuals for supper and breakfast generally and
drink tea but twice a week. "

15 May Zeviah Spier Is released from Eldress and Elizabeth Goodrich appointed/ at 2d Order.
Zeviah comes back to 1stOrder to live and Elizabeth moves to 2d Order.
22 May "As we have contemplated building a new house next year/ Henry begins to cut window
frames" from seasoned wood.
23 May Brethren go Into the woods and cut timber forthe new house.
2 June Elders and deacons consider the suggestion of how many cows and sheep it is necessary
for them to have kept for the comfort of the family and agree that 18-20 co&s and
140 sheep are necessary.
4 June "Nathan Spier labors with our boys and brings them to the confession of their sins."
5 June "The brethren assemble after dinner to hear the boys" confess their wickedness. "
2 July "The elders of the 1st Order go Into the Meeting House after the spectators are dismissed
and admonish the Believers for tale-bearing and for telling things out of their own order."
7 July "Nathan Spier and Henry go to Troy and inform themselves about the world's manner of
making window shutters."
8 Aug Brethren at Lebanon and Watervliet give $400 to suffering poor by the latefire in
Petersburgh/ Va.
25 Aug Stephen Wells is summoned to appear before three justices/John Yates/ Esq. Bogart
and Esq. Hanson/ in Albany and to bring the Kingsbury children with him.
26 Aug Stephen goes with a number of brethren and sisters. The case goes against him/ the court
deciding that Betsy Kingsbury should have the children. Shakers believed this was "very
unjust" as "The woman had prest the children upon the Believers and she had bound them
by indentures" and now to take the children and not allowing them anything for keeping
and clothing the children/ so the Shakers take itto Court of Common Pleas.
27 Aug "The two Kingsbury children stay at the 1st House today for fear of a mob coming after
them."
