28 Aug "John Angus comes to inform us that his brother James with a number of men are coming
to take Stephen and the children. The above rabble arrive and make search for Stephen
and the two children but find them not. They break a pane of glass at the 2d Family
but do no other damage. They go off just before dark. "
30 Aug Chancellor Kent's wife and her brother with some others corne on a visit and take dinner.
Lucas Witbeck and his wife and Thomas McKew's wife, Polly Goodell and others here
on a visit and take supper.
5 Sept Eunice Bennet is brought from Lebanon to live at CF .
20 Sept "The brethren generally turn out to get fat pine to make a tar kiln.
22 Sept During the last four months, have made 2731 Ib. of cheese and 650 Ibs. butter at CF.
2 Oct "Justice Norwood is taken by a warrant for not paying muster fines. The constable takes
him right off to Albany jailbut Webs^r and John Geddes/ in a friendly manner/ pay
the money and Justice is released.
Brethren take most of CF cows down to the River Farm to pasture and also the young hogs
to use the skim milk.
Two brothers and two sisters go to takecare of the cows and pigs and make butter.
5 Oct Finish burning the tar kiln and have about 14 bl. tar and 240 busheis of coal.
14 Oct "Mary Marten comes here to see the two iKingsbury children for tbe purpose of being an
evidence for the brethren In court that is coming on next week. "
19 Oct "Deacon Peter, Ward/ Betsy and Mary Robinson go to court this morning. The above
brothers and sisters return about 11 p.m. and inform us that the case goes against the
brethren and that the 2d Family /horses and the pleasure wagon that we lent to them
are seized and taken by a constable for a delinquency in paying muster fines. Bail was
requested/ not accepted/ so the brothers and sisters were leftin the streets ofAlbany
late in the night. After much trouble they hire a wagon and horses and got home a
little beforeday."
20 Oct Elder Brother and Nathan Spier go to Lebanon to consult the Ministry and elders there
about this matter and decide to prosecute the matter. The constable brings back the
wagon and one horse but keep one horse. The brothers of the 2d Family tell him they
do not choose to take any partof the property unless they get the whole.
21 Oct Elder Brother and Nathan with Calvin Green go to Hudson to see the State Attorney Van
Buren but he is not athome so they cross the river and head home,, arriving about 5 a . m .
on Oct. 22.
23 Oct Go to see Van Vechten in Albany about prosecuting the constable "for seizing joint
property to pay individual fines."
27 Oct 2d Family horse sold in Albany today at vendue and Webst.e^r araS John Geddes buy him
and give him to David Train for what they paid for him.
30 Oct Rufus Bishop/ Calvin Green and David Hawkins return from New York City where they
have been consulting with lawyers regarding "our present difficulty respecting the
mil Itarylaw."
Deacon Peter and Calvin go to Albany to get "an execution against the constable for
taking the wagon and horses. "
31 Oct Deacon Peter/ Abijah/ DaWeT Hawkins and Calvin Green go to Albany and see the
Lieut. Governor "converning our difficulty regarding military requisitions... and say
he feels very f r i e n d l y . "
4 Nov Bring cows back from River Farm.
18 Nov Elder Brother Seth and author receive request from Mother to go to Lebanon to consult
with them about a memorial to be drawn up and sent to Legislature at theirnext session.
21 Nov Woman named Mariah Benson with a young child comes and "wants to get in and live
with us. "
