A Listingof Some Unusual-Happenings


1789 David Preston and Eliphalet Slosson were tendingpjcoal kiln one night. The straw and
April brush cabin in which they slept caught fire from a small fire they had for warmth . They had
to, crawlthru the fire toget out and were burned quite severely. Eliphalet recovered/ but
David, after several days/ died.

1789 Widow Bennett's place used to gather a family by Peter Dodge; then lead of family went to
June Daniel Wood/ then Ebenezer Alden/ their Samuel Pease/ then Aaron Wood .

1797 Amos Hammond Jr. got in deep part of mill pond/ David Cole tried to save him/ they both
June drowned.

1809 "Old log house" then occupied by Young Believers, caught from from its "stick chimney"
May and burned down.

1815 Day school established for the children.

1809 "A black man by the name of Primas Lane who/ with his family/ had been some time living
Nov among the Believers/ goes offwith his familyexcept two of his daughters. He commences
a suit against us/ claiming his children to be his slaves. Three suitsin succession we have
to attend with $26 cost for each one; .... ifis decided (in Superior Court) that the girls
are free people/ to act for themselves and thus this tedious affairends. "

1813 "A pestilentialfever" raging more or less throughout the U.S. and is quite severe among
Beleevers. From February 8 to Feb. 26/ 20 died at New Lebanon/ quite a few sick at
Wstervliet but none died.

1815 Justice Harwood taken by constables to jailin Albany forrefusing to perform militia duty
Oct or pay his fine. But he is bailed out by others who pay his fine.


20 Mar Act passed In Legislature exempting Shakers from military service in time of peace.
1816 Getting ready to build new dwelling/ have to move office/ horse shed/ scale house and
office barn.


1818 Legislature now revise law and put $4 fine on any Shaker who Is exempted from militia duty
April (or 20 days imprisonment) ,

1818 At Hancock/ when attempting to shoot a mad dog that had come into the village, Samuel
June Draper shot Solomon Youngs/ who died.

r/ayor Birdsallof Albany was shot while leading a parade by an Irishman James Hamilton.
He died in an hour. Hamilton executed.
