2 Jan Sori-ed over the chair backs and picked out 29,
3 Jan Scraped chair backs and marked off about 1/4 of them with the pattern on both sides,
3 Jan Went to mill and tenoned the backs and rouncded the top edge of them all .
Every day after school Thomas works on stringing broom handles and has done 1500
since Jan. 1 .
20 Jan Finished morticing 56 chair posts.
22 Jan Put together 1 1 short backs forchairs for Office.
23 Jan Put together 15 backs.
24 Jan Finished 28 backs and pinned them together.
26 Jan V\fent to, Albany and gotsome stain forchairs.
30-31 Bored chair posts and drove them together, making 28. Added to the first 30, makes
58 chairs finished.
4 Feb Took chairs to dye house chamber where sisters will stain them.
Began working on rest of chair material .
28 Feb Put 12 more chairs together. This finished thesmall chairs (86).
13 Mar Have been working at broom handles. Thomas has strung 100 per day for 3 days,
Freegift has dressed offall that needed dressing, bored all holes that were not bored
right or not at all, and made all the pins for stringing.
20 Mar Finished backs for great chairs.
21 Mar Began to mortice.
24 Mar Put backs together and pinned them.
26-27 Put great chairs together, 6 in all . They now need arms and rockers.
2 A|Jr Went to mill to get out material forrockers.
4 Apr Wsnt out Into the east woods and cut a white ash for wheelbarrow sides* Thomas got
yoke of oxen and sled and drew home 3 logs from it.
6 Apr Went out into the woods and trimmed up remainder of ash tree and drew to mill .
In afternoon buzzed it up into about 30 slats 3/4" thick for bottom of trundle bedstead.
9 Apr ** "Thomas was taken from the boys' class today and stationed in our room to live with

16 Apr Worked on rockers for great chairs,
23 Apr Fitted in two pair of rockers.
24 Apr Cut the rabbets in theother 54 great chairs.
25 Apr Put in rockers and pinned them.

13 May Finished arming theyg reat chairs except for pinning to back posts.
22 May Finished off great chairs and took to red woodhouse, then made a beginning to work
on Jennet's settee.
26 May Turned 29 rounds for settee and some of legs.
28 May Bored seat, glued In legs.
2 June Flnishedssettee "so that job is through with much to my releasement. "
5 June Began a set of shelves for Catharine in s.w. chamber in Stone Shop.
9 June Have on hand, strung and ready, forwinding,, 5000 broom handles.
17 June Raked hay nearly all morning in dooryard. In afternoon hoed my potatoes the 2d time.
In July he and Thomas put in a well 7'2" deep with a curb laid up with brick and put
a chain pump on it.
