20 June Hold another meeting to consider whether to repairold mill or build a new one. General
opinion again was to build a new one.
21 June O/er 20 brethren and boys went to River Farm to hoe or weed the broom corn and 3
sisters went as cooks, (About 30 in al!). All returned on 25th of June.
27 June C. Miller and Daniel went toSaratoga for a load of cicuta. (conium maculatum)

28 June Brought yearling calves home from River Farm. It was said they had been in Frellgh's
field ofrye and one of them had a very badly lacerated thigh "done by some villain. "
C. Copley and some of office sisters go to Amsterdam to sell palm leafhats & bonnets.
5 July C. Copley 7 Clarissa (Vedder) & Lydia (Annas) go on another journey to sellpalm leaf
hats and bonnets. Return on July 8th.
12 July "Elder Brother, DAB and Benjamin Youngs went out with chain and compass to find the
true course and distance of the spiritual fountain from the center of the Holy City of
Wisdom's Valley."

28 July C. Copley and C. Miller went looking for lobelia and found none.
16 Aug C. Miller got some lobeliaacross the Mohawk River.
1 7 Aug DAB and two others went to Van Schaick's Island forpennyroyal but did not get much .
18 Aug DAB and C. Miller went to Tymeson's for sweet bugle.
22 Aug Three brethren began digging a ditch to drain the water from the stone quarry.
The botanists begin distilling peppermint and spearmint.
23 Aug Begin repairing old mill so can use it until the new one is finished.
25 Aug Have to draw the water from the pond to fix mill and get 10-12 bushels of bullheads
and eels--enough to furnish allthe families with a large meal. "Sunfish we caught In
great quantity which were free for beggars and the like, by whom we were w e l l
throng'd, too much so for our comfort."
31 Aug "Elder Brother, DAB, Benjamin Youngs and Frederick (Wicker) went today to set the
stone at the SW corner of the Holy City, which corner was found by survey, with the
aid and guidance of the Holy Angels, through the medium of divine inspiration. The
stone set atthis corner was a sort of cobblestone in a triangular form, having three
corners, the smallest corner being placed upward about 6" above the surface of the
ground. The stone in length, from one side to the corner is upwards of 3 feet; and upon
one side of the stone were cut, in tolerable size letters, the following words, viz:
'SW Corner, May 5, 1842."
2 Sept Some of the brethren subject to militia service, went to West Troy to get a certificate ^
from the doctor of their inability to serve. They were: WiHard , Ephraim firv^f

15 Sept C. Miller has finished making about 40 Ib. stramonium extract.
(WEbster: dried leaf of thorn apple used similarly to belladonna esp. in asthma and
contains the alkaloids atropme, hyoscymine and scopolamine.)
16 Sept The physicians went to Tymeson's, near Vischer's Ferry, forelderberries to make into
wine for medicine,
19 Sept They have to buy a horse to work on the treadmill to scrape broom corn because their
other horses refuse to work there,
21 Sept Drawing timbers for the new mill,
22 Sept "By the command of God, this day is kept as a day ofpurification throughout this
Society."
23 Sept The botanist has made a large quantity of dandelion extract.
