25 Jan Two cases of small pox at SF.
27 Jan Joseph Pelham, accompanied by Sylvester Prentiss, goes to Groveland to attend
court; "a charge brought against him by a seceder."
8 Feb Freegift "getting out" timber for about 10.0 chairs.
12 Mar Freegift and a couple of boys began turning the chair rounds.
8 Mar Papers tell of "terrible fighting at Island No. 10, and at Corinth, Tenn."
25 Apr DAB sets out 100 little (1" dia.) hard maple trees "by east side of creek
and from mill to graveyard and onwards". Got them from SF woods.
10 MAY Great fire in Troy. 1000 ft. of bridge, 5070 of buildings, Union Depot,
Orphan Asylum, Warrens Female Charity School, Union House Hotel, Washington
& Fulton House Hotels, Troy Gityi:Bank, 4-5 churches destroyed.
9 May Joseph Youngs of SF died. "He was not compus mentis but was considered
rather a fool; he acknowledged himself to be a fool' and, I understand,
that he said the difference between him and his father was that he was a
fool and knew it, but his father was a fool and did not know it."
27 May The 4 Shaker families sent four wagonloads for the suffering in Troy.
5 June Justice Harwood of 2d Family ill. Went to Dr. Wade yesterday to be bled,
had 1% pints of blood taken. "This reduced him very low and it is thought
he had a light stroke of the palsy. Alex Youngs and Joel Smith brought him
home in a covered wagon on a bed. He is confined to his room."
11 Aug Two of our y outh, Winfield S. Smith and Chas. Lee, absconded this a.m.,
went down to Niskayuna and there enlisted in the army. Being under age,
Benjamin Stow became their guardian and responsible for them.
13 Aug Chas. Tinkham ran off to enlist but his father, who lived at SF, went & got
him and took him to SF.
1 Sept Hannah Wells, an aged sister at 2d Family, died. "She was one of the Mother
of Zion's children in her day and has officiated as a leading character in
that family for many years. While living, she was greatly beloved by all
around her, and forever will her character be revered by all the faithful in
Mother's house." Aged 86 yr, 1 m, 11 d.
22 Sept Nehemiah White went to Albany to see about boys and Albert Lomas went to
Mass, "to see what prospect there was of finding some good boys in the Mass.
State Alms House," but found nothing.
9 Oct Geo. Ingalls arrived from North Canton, Ohio, having come to avoid being
drafted, laws of State of Ohio did not exclude Believers from draft, NYS
did at present.
30 Oct Geo. Price & Philip Smith to Albany to see Judge Woolford about draft call.
31 Oct. Nehemiah White & Orin Beaver go to see Judge Woolford. "Some are cleared
on account of infirmity and others for their profession."
"No man in England thinks of blacking his own boots," said an Englishman to
