^n. Nehemiah White received six boys from Reformed School in Providence, R.I. and'Jesse
Harwood got four girls for the 2d Order.
15 Jan., Four of the boys ran away.
1A Inn Rnvs have returned "They are dirty, wet and hungry. They wandered in the rain and
muc^ u^tSthe; got to Troy. No one took them in during the night and they had to laydown
in the lumber yard under the boards and casks/ 1 ^
4 Feb -William Seely died at 2d Family. "His sufferings of late have been quite *
severe. He has always been a very great working character, very much inte-
rested in temporal matters, especially. He would continue to work at sizing
broom corn when he had to be helped to the shop by a couple of brethren."
6 Feb Luther Wells, "an aged and worthy brother" died at 2d Family of consumption
and old age.
19 Feb Jesse Harwood takes 3 or 4 of 2d Order children and 1 from ChF back to RI
Reform School.
26 May "William Seward, the US Secretary, came out here accompanied by his daughter
and a young man, having by railroad accident been prevented from pursuing
his journey on to Auburn. '
15 July We hear of a riot in Troy bec^se of the draft.
23 July They learn of Elder Caleb Dyer's being shot on Saturday night in Enfield, N.H. for refusing
to allow Thomas Wire to see his two daughters 'legally indentured to the Society." Elder Caleb
walked into officeunassisted and then to infirmary. Thomas Wire walked to his home, fol-
lowed by six young brethren who were threatened not to come closer or be shot. Elder
Caleb had taken the children 23 months ago after much pleading because their mother was
very ill,supposedly dying. Has since recovered. Thomas had joined the Army but, after
a few months in Virginia, returned sick and emaciated. Since then had tried to get children
back. Elder Caleb died.
28 Aug Oscar Merchant found dead in his bed. About 21, subject to fits, "had ex-
pressed many times that he wished he could die in some of them, and it seems
his desire and prayers have been answered.11 3 or 4 others sleeping in same
room but heard nothing.

22 Sept. Letter from Ministry that 18 brethren had been drafted and were to report October 4.
7 or 8 are aliens, severalare-physically disabled. Hear that Ifothers claim conscientious
objector status, Marshall will put in uniform at once and put gun in hand or tie on back and
march them away to camp.
Henry Bllnn and another at Canterbury have been drafted, 8 or 9 atEnfield, 4 at Shirley.
28 Sept. DAB took girls to Rosendale (or the Vedder place) to gather milkweed pods to get the
floss for stuffinglittle cushions, etc.
