BROTHER SETH'S JOURNEY TO LONG ISLAND in 1819 - HIS OLD HOME.
"Many references to various members of the Wells Family"

Wed., May 19, 1819: "Left Watervliet 6 a.m. to Albany. At 11 got under weigh with
a fresh breeze from the northwest on board the sloop "Genesee", Capt. Mebbett
of Albany, with 60 passengers besides the sloop's crew. At Athens opposite
Hudson, we landed 3 passengers, at Rhinebeck we came to anchor and landed
some baggage and furniture for a Revd. Minister by the name of Howe. At New
Paltz near Poughkeepsie, landed another passenger. Passed Poughkeepsie be-
tween daylight and dark, sailed through the Highlands in the night. Betsy
Hastings very sick all night, Betsy Wells some seasick. No sleep for us
till near morning."
Thurs., 20th: At 8 a.m. arrived safe in New York. Not much comfort in cooking and
eating on board though the captain and crew were kind and the passengers very
civil; yet we were so crowded with passengers that there was not much com-
fort to be taken on board.
Booked passage to go to Long Island on Friday afternoon, but near the time
o sailing, Captain informed them he had booked another load so he would
not be able to sail until Saturday. However, already on board were a number
of female passengers "who to all appearance would have been very disagreeable
companions and the cabin was disagreeable, so Luther went and found them
another passage to leave Saturday afternoon. So took the sisters to Brooklyn
to stay overnight.
Sat., 21st: Set sail at 6 p.m. "with a light breeze and a strong flood tide" and
before sunset paSSED THROUGH Hellgate, and about 8:45 were off Sandy Point
lighthouse (20 miles from NY); about 12:30 passed Eaton Neck lighthouse (40
miles from NY), and at daylight were opposite Setauket Harbor (60 miles from
NYC).
Sun., 22nd: About 2 p.m. landed passenger at Riverhead, now were going against
tide and wind, so anchored off Rocky Point about midnight. Arrived in
Cutchague about 8 a.m. Monday, May 23rd. Had been more than 20 years since
he had seen his father's farm.
