Part Two--The Ministry of New Lebanon 1787-1946

Father James Whittaker succeeded Mother Ann, and he continued the
efforts to make a permanent and united Shakerism. A great sign of this
was the building of the meeting-house at New Lebanon in October, 1785.
From this time onward, religious leadership was here rather than at
Watervliet, the first home of the Shakers in America. The religious
leaders at New Lebanon would have various names: "Lebanon M i n i s t r y , "
"Central Ministry," "Ministry of Mount Lebanon/ 1 "Lead Ministry," and
"Parent Ministry," Nonetheless, from 1785 until the 1 930's, when
Canterbury came to dominate, the ultimate religious authority in
Shakerism was the Ministry of New Lebanon.
