                            Giles  borrows   $80 from   Justice  Harwood   to buy  guano   for the Hill   Family

                            at  Lebanon.

<b>1  Sept</b>     Wm.  Lansing  has  sued  the SF   for wages.

<b>2  Sept</b>  (Sun) Elder   Frederick   Evans  comes by   request   to  speak  at public   meeting.

<b>4  Sept</b>     Giles  goes  to CF  south farm    to see  the  crops.   They  have   about  20
<br>
                            acres  of pop   corn;  about  75  acres under   the  plow.

<b>5  Sept</b>     Ministry   go  to Groveland.     Back  on  19th.   Back  to Lebanon   on  22nd.

<b>14  Oct</b>     (NL)Meet   with  all  the  elders  & deacons   to discuss   what  to do   about
<br>
                            the  debt  of  the Maine   Shakers--$16,000--whether      to break   it up  (both
<br>
                            Gloucester   & Poland) & sell     its possessions    bo  pay its debts,    or to
<br>
                            raise  some money    from  all the  societies   to  loan  them  to keep   going
<br>
                            &  work  their  way  out od debt.     Decide  on  the latter & prepare     a letter
<br>
                            to  go out  to  raise  $<b>4000</b>  as  a donation   to give   them  Jan. 1,  <b>1861</b>, or
<br>
                            before.
<br>
                            Also  discussed   removing   the house   at  their meeting   ground   on  the  moun-
<br>
                            tain  and  it was  given   to the Ministry    to  dispose  of.
<br>
                            Discussed   the  repairing   of  the  old burial   ground.    Some-advocated
<br>
                            abandoning   the use   of  tombs;tones   of any   size  or kind;  other,   including
<br>
                            the  Ministry,   thought   it most proper    to have  a  small  gravestone,    about
<br>
                            18"xl2",   perhaps   2 1/2-3"   thick,  laid  flat;  others   a small  tree at
<br>
                 :           the head   of each  grave.    Nothing   decided.
<br>

                29          Giles  comes   to WV  to settle   about  a  school  teacher.    Appoint Albert
<br>
                            Lomas,   Chauncey  Dibble   to  take  charge  of  the boys  between   schools.
