14 Jan "There is a universal cryout from Deacons and Trustees in
every Society of Believers both east & west that it is
almost impossible to make sales of seeds, & this is univer-
sally experienced by all seedsmen among the world through-
out our whole country. This seems to be partially owing to
a very late & backward spring last season, and partially
& mainly to the war between the northern and southern
states. Many seeds which have formerly gone south are, by
reason of this war, now confined to the northern states &,
of course, the country is entirely glutted with seeds and
our brethren at Enfield, Ct. have now on hand about $20,000
worth of garden seeds which they have paid the money for,
but cannot possibly dispose of a@jf any rates."

trouble at SF on account of so many families coming in who
are in destitute circumstances. One large family from St.
Lawrence Co. near the Canada line, a man, woman and 12 chil-
dren, some of whom came here about 2 months since, and the
parents & balance of the children arrived on the 10th, having
been 10 days on their journey. Their name is Clement.
This family and 2 oth^ers have to b/e set up in housekeeping
at the SF# which unavoidably brings considerable burden upon the
family there, as they have to furnish everything needful
for the occasion."
25 Jan There are 2 cases of smallpox at SF contracted from the
clothing of an infant that recently died with it at the WF.
Was sick with it when the mother, a niece of Elder Bro
Jeremiah Lowe, came to visit him. She has since professed
to unite with the Believers and is at the SF. She took one
of the baby's garments with her, unknown to the sisters, tho
her clothes were all buried for 10 days.
