<b>14  July</b>     Ephraim     Prentiss    was   at   NL  extracting,      cleaning     &  filling

<b>22  Oct</b>     Bro   Benjamin     Gates    goes   with   George    Ingalls     (from    No.  Union)
<br>
                              to  assist    him   in  getting    a  reprieve,      because    he   has   been
<br>
                             formally     drafted     for   the  army.
<br>
                             On   the  28th    they   returned     from   a  trip   to  Washington      DC
<br>
                             Vjj/here they   saw   the   President     Lincoln,     Secretary      Stan ton,
<br>
                             Secretary      Seward,    &  Brig.    Gen.   Buckingham.        The   latter    was
<br>
                             a  special     commissioner       &  furnished     George    with   authoritative
<br>
                             papers     of  reprieve     with   governmental       seal.     Benjamin     also
<br>
                             received     instructions       that,    if  any   more   of   the  Shakers     in
<br>
                             any   of   the  Societies      were   drafted,     by  forwarding      their    names
<br>
                             &  a  certificate       of  their    non-resistant       principles      &  consci-
<br>
                             entious     scruples     to  Washington,       the  reprieve     papers     would
<br>
                             be   furnished     for   them.

<b>6  Jan</b>       Jesse    Harwood    sold   a  wood    lot.    Hired    a  surveyor,      laid   it
<br>
                              out   in  1/2   acre   lots,    advertised      for   a day   of   sale,    sold   it
<br>
                              for   $3,647,    an   average    of   $52.50    per  acre.
<br>
