12 Feb At CF, Henry Bussell, William's son, "is again here as a
candidate. He has long been sick, now has fits & came here
under the mere pretense of a visit. The Elders have got
into some trouble about him, considering the conditions- of
the family, father & children all being here."
15 (Sun) Attended meeting with CF. "Some increases spiritually
since we were at WF before, more zeal & freedom in meeting,
& members of the family much more orderly."
16 Elder Daniel preparing a machine to split basket stuff for
fancy baskets. Giles began a writing desk for the Ministry
Shop.
18 Feb A bill has just passed the Legislature "authorizing the
town supervisors to levy a tax on the towns to raise
money to pay bounty to volunteers or to refund to those who
loaned money to the towns last fall for that purpose.
14 Mar Giles finished the desk.
18 Mar Ministry back to Lebanon.
10 Apr Fred Evans & Ben j . Gates go to Albany to see Judge Harris
relative to the bearing of the Conscript Law on the Shakers
in general. "Our State Legislature has repealed the law
passed last season exempting Quakers & Shakers from military
duty" thus making all eligible to by^ear arms or pay $300 not
to fight. Judge Harris's opinion the same as Ex-Go v. Morgan----
to be quiet and, if drafted, he & others would actively
assist in procuring their exemption.
21 Apr (NL) Elder Daniel works on baskets; Giles is learning
tailoring & cutting clothes.
9 May Ministry come to WV.
11 May The Clement family, about 14 in number, "are now ready for
a removal out again into the world."
13 May Bro. Richard Dean came to Ministry Shop "concerning a very
disorderly & improper use of cider at WF here."
14 May Giles engaged in making up an account of the pensions due
to persons who died among Believers who served in the
Revolutionary War & War of 1812.

17 (Sun) First public meeting of the year.
19 May Ministry went to Groveland. Return on 28th.
3 June At WF to make arrangements for Polly Wicks to go to a phys-
ician & surgeon named Greene to have a cancer removed.
Also to talk to prominent leading brethren about our dis-
pleasure with them for the habit of using cider, which they
have been doing again after it had been abandoned for many
years.
Also concerning the younger ones using tobacco. "We en-
deavor to make a clean sweep of the whole concern."
