12 Nov HK Making catsup "from the debris of the stewed & canned
tomatoes. The skins etc. are put into casks with a little
salt & suffered to stew some five or 6 weeks & until all
the tomatoes is thoroughly digested from the skin & the
water rises on the top. This is then drawn off & the pulp
strained thru sieves & cooked & seasoned & bottled, thus
making a very great saving in tomatoes."
13 Nov * Giles is gathering locust seed. Farmers are getting in
turnips, potatoes, cabbages, carrots, etc. & also making
cider.
On the llth Benjamin Gates called to report to Ministry
about his visit to Washington where he saw Secretary of War
Stanton & Provost Marshall Fry. "The Secretary set before
him the difficulties in the way of any special action in
favor of the Shakers, but assured him he would do all in his
power for the Shakers; said he would say some things to him,
and, of ne cessity, must leave others to be understood.
The result was an order was directed to the Provost Marshall
to suspend any further action in the case of the Shakers
conscripts until further orders. At the same time adding,
Benjamin, if any of your conscripts leave your society I
wish you to inform me immediately and give me the name."
14 Nov Chauncey Miller again asks to be released from the Office.

19 Nov Elder Daniel "getting out basket stuff," & Giles gathering
locust seed. Giles goes around the farm with Stanton.
Finds some trembling aspen for making fancy plain glove
boxes for sale.
20 Nov Giles gets stuff into the mill for beehives, "contemplating
making a dozen or fifteen double, compound, dead air chamber
beehives, with movable frames for comb, on a new plan."
21 Nov Asa Seaton moved from SF to CF, Elizabeth SEely moved into
the CF Office & Phebe Ann Buckingham moved out. John
Hughes moved from SF to WF.

27 Nov Giles at mill preparing his beehive stuff "on Freegift's buzz
