9 Apr I Albert Loomis- and Orin Beaver go to Lebanon,
/ Joseph Pelhani "is very unwell and considerably deranged."
16 Apr (NL) Receive $700 from Union Village, Ohio, for New Glou-
cester; at Lebanon, CF gives $550, 2d Family $175; North
Family $25; Ministry $50 for NF and $25 from themselves,
totaling $1200.
22 May Ministry come to WV.
27 May Begin painting "the Meeting House.
Finish 1st coat on 29th and start second coat.
30 May Apple trees begin to bloom, also strawberries, pears in
full bloom. Sisters painting meeting house fence.
2 June At WF, five have left the past week, all young "but never
true Shakers."
4 June Painting Meeting House roof and "in the afternoon have a
terrible shower which makes most terrible work with the
sides of the building which should have been painted last.
Almost the whole family turh out in the evening to wash off
the paint; work until 8 p.m. Mercury 90 in shade.
5 June Finish painting meeting house roof and begin repairing the
sides. Finish on 6th.
13 June Giles goes to Lebanon "to get some papers relative to
Shakers' military troubles, in order to make up a memorial
to present to the committee who are now sitting to revise
our State Constitution. We wish to get the Constitution so
shaped that no statute laws can be passed requiring military
servitude of those having conscientious scruples conerning
learning or practising the art of war, and no equivalent
for a neglect to do so.* Back on 14th.
14 June Charles Bracket and his boy are painting the dwelling house
roof.
15 June Put blinds back on meeting house windows, painted at SF.
20 June Ministry go to Groveland. Return on July 2d.
7 July (Sun) Giles speaks at public meeting.
10 July Ministry return to Lebanon.
6 Aug Elder Frederick Evans asked to come to speak at public
meeting. "There is much ex citement in town & county in
consequence of the stopping of public meetings." Citizens
of Lebanon Valley sent them a guarantee of good behavior if
Shakers would reopen public meetings.
20 Aug Albert Lomas & Thomas Beal go to Lebanon to get a bull calf
at the NF.
