28 Mar Ministry "much engaged striving to reconcile parties to the
organization of the deaconship of the family & reconcile
the Trustees to duties."
31 Mar Giles putting his hives out. Lost about 30 colonies "for
want of honey, tho we fed about 2 barrels of sugar to our
bees last fall."
1 Apr Ministry "have a talk with Bro.C. Miller striving to recon-
cile his feelings to keep the deaconship; he at length
concludes to do so for 4 years or until he is 60 years old."
4 Apr Giles writes a new will for Abial Hathaway of SF; also have
a long talk with him concerning his business relations.
Also talk with Elder Austin relative to the business of the
family; how brethren shall be apportioned to business, etc.
5 Apr Ministry meet in evening with -the Elders and Nehemiah
White & Philip Smith about business conditions.
7 Apr Ministry have a long talk with C. Miller about providing
the family with Graham flour, wheat grits, etc. Also about
stock, the Angora goat, etc.
9 Apr Ministry return to Lebanon.
Elders Otis Sawyer & John Vance arrive there; "they have
started on a projecting tour to find a good location for
locating a Society of Shakers, as it is contemplated moving
out of the State of Maine, if possible to sell out there."
"They have very many solicitations to come to the Shenendoah
Valley in Virginia, accordingly they conternplete going to
some of the norp\t)srn counties of Virginia & prospect some. "
16 June Ministry come to WV. "We find C. Miller is going to Ky.
to look after the interests of our wild land in that local-
ity on the banks of the Licking River, about 160 miles from
Cincinnati by river. * There is some 30,000 acres."
19 (Sun) Very large meeting--about 1000. Albert Lomas spoke.
22 June Ohio Ministry visiting. Have consulation about "the style
of pockets in surtouts & overcoats; may be put in on the
sides, just forward of the arm, having a slat of 2 inches
from a perpendicular. Meeting frockcoats to be made with
two pockets to open on the outside & one or more pockets
on inside."

23 June Giles writing to the Societies to hold prayer meetings on
Sunday evenings at 7:30.

24 June C. Miller returns from Kentucky. Appears to have confi-
dence that the property there is well secured by legal title
& increasing rapidly in value. Says a coal mine is open
on the place and now being worked & a man has got out 400
tons & getting out more.
10 July At NF appoint Nathaniel Fry to live with Eld Sylvester
Prentiss who is very sick & seems unlikely to survive long.
